Search is a Belgian entity whose mission is to transform the way individuals, organizations and governments deal with conflict from confrontational approaches to cooperative solutions.
Search for Common Ground in Nigeria is looking to fill the opening for Project Interns for the operation of the Interactive Voice Response (IVR – Toll-Free Lines) System for Early Warning and Early Response (Ewer) Mechanism on the « Promoting and Protecting the Freedom of Religion and Belief » Project.

Search has established a permanent presence in Abuja as an operational base and all our Nigeria offices are currently supporting a host of programs with activities that include capacity building, dialogues, peace architecture, media programming, participatory theater, and collaborative joint activities.
Summary of Position
The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to test academic knowledge in real-life scenarios, under the guidance of a highly professional team. The intern will further advance his/her knowledge in the program area and build interest in the operations of an INGO. S/he will also gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge required for success in a global workplace. The Project Intern will also develop decision-making and critical thinking skills, and increase confidence and self-esteem.
S/he will work under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and in close coordination with the Project team, and the EWER team.

Major duties and responsibilities

      • Receiving calls through the IVR system from project communities and providing accurate, satisfactory answers to their queries and concerns on Early Warning violations and threats within project locations.
      • Manage and de-escalate situations involving violent conflicts in the project communities; offering real-time assistance and support to the necessary response unit(s) for short, medium, or long-term assistance.
      • Call stakeholders to collate, inform and ascertain information periodically within their communities for further data analysis.
      • Record all IVR calls from all six (6) geo-political zones for onward transmission to the database backup for storage.
      • Collaborate and triangulate information with security agencies, and community influencers on any other relevant stakeholders.
      • Provide feedback to the project manager and project team in real-time on early warning signals and/or events.
      • Provide diligent, resourceful, and timely information to the Team for storage on the back-end database of the EWER System
      • Be discreet with sharing sensitive security information with persons not authorized.
      • Provide other necessary support to the team relating to the project.
      • Perform any other task as may be assigned by the project manager
      • Understands, explains and shares information on assigned tasks with accuracy and clarity to those assigned on deliverables.
      • Demonstrate regular and consistent communication skills and frequency with supervisors, colleagues, security agencies, and all project locations.
Qualifications Essential:
      • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Political Science, Conflict and peacebuilding studies, international relations,  Sociology, Psychology, or related fields;  or any other relevant degree.
      • Previous experience is an advantage but not required: Had volunteered with Search or any other INGO and understands Search’s ethics.
      • Proficiency in using Microsoft office software: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. is required.
      • Excellent analytical and report-writing skills;
      • Experience working in a conflict environment is a plus.
      • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
      • Flexibility in terms of office hours.
      • Written and spoken fluency in English is required. Proficiency in Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba languages is an added advantage.

      • Learning Ability: The ability to absorb new information readily and to put it into practice effectively
      • Organization of Work: Manages his/her time effectively and takes initiative, finding innovative ways to get the job done. Demonstrates self-reliance and resourcefulness
Duration of Internship
      • The internship duration of Six months
Intern Allowance
      • The intern will be eligible for a daily stipend of NGN 2,500 for each working day. Payment will be made at the end of the month for the days worked. SEARCH is not liable for any payments, insurance, or other liability beyond this allowance.
Location of Assignment
      • The locations for the position are Abuja, Nigeria.
