The Regional Communications and Media Lead will be accountable for leading Plan International integrated communications and leadership engagement strategy in alignment with the organizational gender transformative programming and influencing approach. S/he is expected to position Plan International in the region as the go-to organisation and partner of choice for children’s rights and equality for girls, and to connect and interact with key audiences (both internal and external) to gain support for the mission of Plan International in the Region. S/he will lead the regional crisis management strategic communications together with the RH Management Team and provide high quality support and technical guidance to the COs Media and Communications Leads across the region.

Accountabilities

  1. Conduct virtual visits to countries in connection with ED and Country Offices for a good Country-Region connection and the needs of the most remote communities including documentation of the process
  1. Support the finalization of the Regional GGE Plan incorporating the priorities of the countries in connection with the GH and the various regional partners including its implementation;
  1. Lead and support the development and delivery of creative and strategic media and communications tools in line with organisational ambition at regional and country levels;
  1. Produce high quality materials including information packs, opinion pieces, power point presentations, press releases, speeches and talking points, opinion pieces, news reactions, photos, blogs, annual reports, newsletters, video and multimedia content;
  1. Support senior management in crisis management on media, brand and communications aspects
  2. Ensure a strong leadership engagement strategy is in place and effectively implemented working with the RH Management team, the Regional HROD and the Regional Transformation Project Manager;
  1. Represent the RH in global platforms on Media, Communications and Brand aspects and be the focal point for communications on issues focused on the regional context;
  1. Work with GH Communications team to highlight CO content in development, ensuring it has a chance to be amplified by NOs and GH in a timely and planned way.
  1. Work with GH Communications to understand the communication and fundraising content needs of NOs and GH, to find smart ways to help all parties deliver content with multiple uses.

  • Ensures that Plan International’s global policies for Child Protection (CPP) and Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI) are fully embedded in accordance with the principles and requirements of the policy including relevant Implementation Standards and Guidelines as applicable to their area of responsibility. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring staff and associates are aware of and understand their responsibilities under these policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct (CoC), their relevance to their area of work, and that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.
  • All interventions identify appropriately the range of risks that arise for children and young people in all their diversity who are engaged in or impacted by such work
  • Stakeholders have the necessary skills and expertise to implement agreed safeguarding measures
  • Images and information on children and young people meet safeguarding and ethical requirements and do not reinforce or exacerbate stereotypes

Technical expertise, skills and knowledge

Essential

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • A first degree or Masters in Communications;
  • A minimum of 05 years of experience of the key responsibilities, including working with media, developing and delivering communications strategies, managing internal communications, knowledge of digital media, and creating networks;
  • Experience of working with international NGOs and understanding of a rights-based approach;
  • Familiarity with the social, political and economic context of the West and Central Africa region, and its humanitarian and development issues;
  • Demonstrated and considerable experience of working with international media, communications or public relations roles;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate; complicated and technical issues in a concise and clear way, to a wide range of target audiences;
  • Sound political judgement and Knowledge of risk management.
  • Understands what safeguarding means for the teams/departments they manage

Skills

  • Skilled photographer/videographer and proficient using photo, web and video editing software;
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, including ability to find, absorb, analyse and prioritise information from many different sources,
  • Proven experience of communication strategy development;
  • Ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines, with competing priorities and minimal supervision;
  • Ability to travel sometimes at short notice and to humanitarian crisis areas
  • Flexibility and adaptability;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work in multi-national, multi-cultural teams;
  • Fluency in English and French.

  • Leads teams to develop the necessary skills and expertise to undertake their roles and responsibilities for safeguarding
  • Leads on organizational change for relevant teams to ensure safeguarding is embedded

  • A record of accomplishment of achieving results and strategic impact on communications and media and in building capacity for teams to deliver.
  • Must show demonstrable impact in using communications as a tool for social change
