POSTE 1 : Regional Director, Africa

  • Salary: Competitive salary and excellent benefits

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and dynamic peacebuilding, humanitarian or development leader with a strong programming background living and working in Africa, and a commitment to delivering tangible and sustained positive change in often challenging situations. You will be a key leader at International Alert, one of the world’s largest and most respected peacebuilding organisations with a 35-year track record.

Reporting to the Director of Programmes, this position is for an experienced manager with a passion for innovation and the strategic vision to guide the consolidation and deepening of our regional peacebuilding programmes across diverse contexts. You will provide leadership and guidance to 80+ staff across DRC, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Rwanda and the UK, directly managing the team’s Country Directors and key regional team staff, while collaborating closely with our Asia-MENA and Eurasia regional programmes and Peacebuilding Advisory Unit.

You will provide strategic leadership for the Africa programme, ensuring that each of our country teams contributes towards a discernible impact on peace and that our staff are talented and motivated to deliver coherent and effective peacebuilding priorities in complex environments. You will manage a strategically sound programming portfolio and work on building its capacity for growth, as well as managing sustainable funding sources. You will take an active role in developing advocacy and influencing priorities for the Africa programme and take pride in representing International Alert through active networking and profiling activity. As an integral part of Alert’s Global Leadership Team, and rotating member of the Executive Team, you will shape and guide broader organisational priorities, ensuring collaboration and continued learning across teams.

We are seeking a candidate with considerable experience of implementing peacebuilding or related work in conflict-affected contexts in Africa. Fluent in English and with strong French language skills, you’ll bring your contextual conflict and cultural understanding gained through extensive experience living and working in African contexts. You will have strong, proven experience in programmes, people and financial management, with a talent for leading, supporting and motivating a large and diverse team. You understand conflict and peacebuilding practice and have an entrepreneurial talent for seizing opportunities for programme growth and building networks, as well as excellent fundraising skills and resource management abilities. A strategic thinker and thought leader, you have a high degree of emotional intelligence and strong analytical skills.

POSTE 2 : Country Director – Niger & Burkina Faso

  • Salary: Circa £45,000 plus benefits (Alert will provide relocation support to those based outside of Niger)

International Alert is looking for an exceptional manager and fundraiser to establish International Alert’s (Alert) operational presence and deepen our peacebuilding engagement and impact in Niger and Burkina Faso. Based in Niamey, you will lead the establishment of country operations in Niger and explore opportunities for Burkina Faso. You will develop Alert’s fundraising strategy and peacebuilding work in Niger and Burkina Faso, including outreach and relationship development with key strategic partners and donors, mapping and pursuing areas of strategic growth, and ensuring programming quality in existing initiatives. You will oversee the implementation of contracts and consultancies, including research.

You will have strong operational management and strategic leadership experience to anchor and expand our programming in Niger and Burkina Faso. You will bring detailed knowledge of living and working in Niger and/or the broader Sahel and an understanding of the conflict context and peacebuilding opportunities. You will demonstrate strong fundraising experience, with the ability to develop and implement strategies, target key stakeholders with appropriate messaging, and maintain strong relationships with donors and implementing partners. You must be a fluent French speaker and ideally be comfortable in English.

POSTE 3 : Conflict Monitoring and Evaluation Manager

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic person to join Alert’s Africa Programme.

​International Alert is part of a consortium with Oxfam and Care for the implementation of a four-year community resilience project funded by the European Union in the regions of Diffa and Agadez in Niger and Lac and Kanem in Chad.

We are looking for qualified and experienced monitoring and evaluation professionals to help build resilience and social cohesion in border areas of Niger and Chad. You will have experience in applying M&E best practice to peacebuilding, development and humanitarian programmes. You will be adaptable, creative and innovative, tailoring your approach to the specific needs of our programme. You will have an excellent understanding of the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin contexts and knowledge of the specific challenges facing Chad and Niger. You will have proven experience providing support to implementation teams with the ability to deliver high-quality training and accompaniment.

To be successful in this role you will be a collaborative team player who builds on colleagues’ knowledge and expertise to provide high quality technical assistance and to maximise learning.

POSTE  4 : Chief of Party

  • Location: Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Closing date: 24 August 2022 (23:59 UK Time)

This is an exciting opportunity to join Alert’s largest country programme – the Democratic Republic of Congo team – as the Chief of Party (COP) of the Dutch funded Improving security, social cohesion and human rights in conflict mineral rich regions of Eastern DRC project. The project is coming to an end in December 2023 but there is a high likelihood that there will be a follow up phase.

This senior manager reports to the DRC Director of Programmes (DOP). The COP will be responsible for the oversight of a team of a consortia including 4 other partners (two international and two national partners). They will be responsible for overseeing a team of 28 and will directly line manage 4 people.

The main goal of the project is to strengthen regional stability in the Great Lakes with the following two specific objectives:

  • Reduced levels of violent conflict and improved security in targeted red 3T and gold mines of South Kivu and Ituri
  • Improved regional security and stability through cleaner chains, more effective governance of mineral chains at all levels

The COP is responsible for the overall implementation of the project; is the primary project representative manages and monitors the budget, the workplan and the progress of the project towards its intended results. He/she is the strategic lead of the project and oversees reporting and coordination across the consortium.

He/she will be required to travel regularly to project locations, specifically Bunia, where they will supervise the sub-team ; frequent travel to regional centres (Kinshasa, Kigali, Bujumbura) and some international travel (specifically in Europe) will also be required for national and regional level advocacy.

Essential qualifications include: extensive experience of implementing large and complex projects in consortia and with several international and local partners; 10 years of professional experience in programme management (strategy, planning, reflection, implementation, monitoring, evaluation); specifically strategic decision making of complex programmes on issues involving extensive political engagement in the DRC or in a similar context. DRC or in a similar context. Substantial NGO project management experience, including responsibility for contract management

To succeed in this job you will have a talent for working effectively in complex, politically charged, unstable environments, and across different cultures. You will be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of actors working on conflict management, social cohesion and development programmes.

Furthermore, we are looking for someone well organized, results and detail-oriented with a proven experience in peacebuilding/ conflict transformation and familiarity with gender- and conflict-sensitive approaches. In addition, experience of developing donor reports and nurturing constructive relationships with international and local partners (governmental and non-governmental) is essential as well as an excellent working knowledge (spoken and written) of both French and English.
