Health Ecologist

Job description
Cirad is recruiting an ecologist to apply the tools and concepts of ecology to health issues in the broadest sense (e.g., link between biodiversity and health, ecology of the transmission of emerging diseases, health and/or ecosystems).
You will carry out a research project in ecology applied to integrated approaches to health within an interdisciplinary team from Cirad’s ASTRE joint research unit, bringing together ecologists, epidemiologists, modelling specialists, microbiologists, socio-economists and anthropologists. You will use population and behavioural ecology approaches (animal mobility, feeding behaviour, population dynamics) to study populations of wild animals that are breeding grounds for zoonoses (particularly bats and rodents). These tools will be combined with methods for monitoring the transmission of infectious diseases (analytical epidemiology, epidemiological modelling) and with social science studies (anthropology, economics, sociology) in collaboration with other researchers from the ASTRE joint research unit, in order to better understand the eco-epidemiological and socio-economic determinants of the emergence of zoonoses.
In an initial assignment of at least 3 years in Guinea, you will participate in the joint research unit’s ongoing projects on reducing the risks of zoonotic disease emergence (Prezode Initiative, EU Ebo-Sursy Project, AFD AFriCam Project, Horizon Europe BCOMING Project). In particular, you will be in charge of designing and implementing the monitoring of wild animal populations (bats in particular) as they interface with domestic animals and humans, in order to better understand the ecological mechanisms of zoonotic disease emergence (coronavirus and filovirus in particular) and to identify strategies for the prevention and control of these diseases.
Based in Conakry, Guinea, you will maintain and develop links with the local institutional, scientific and technical partners of these projects, and set up future research and development projects in collaboration with the other members of the ASTRE unit.
Desired profiled
You have an initial university-level education (MSc or equivalent) and hold a PhD in ecology (population ecology, behavioural ecology, community ecology or health ecology) or conservation biology.
You have expert knowledge in quantitative ecology with the mastery of analytical methods (in particular capture-mark-recapture or spatial analysis) based on the collection of field data (capture and marking, telemetry, biological sampling) and which can be used in eco-epidemiology models (e.g., SIR models).
You are interested in applying ecological theories, concepts and tools to integrated approaches to health (e.g., studies of the ecology of emerging zoonotic disease transmission or the link between biodiversity and health in the context of One Health, EcoHealth, and Planetary Health approaches) in an interdisciplinary framework. Post-doctoral experience and knowledge of working and living contexts in developing countries, particularly in West Africa, would be a plus.
You have good interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to work with partners in research and development projects (e.g., management of research or conservation projects in developing countries).
You are fluent in French and English.
