Description du projet ou contexte

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), signed by 54 of Africa’s 55 countries, is the first step towards achieving the goal of a single continental market. The AfCFTA is intended to create an internal market for 1.3 billion people and expected to boost intra-African trade, promote structural transformation and generate significant employment opportunities in Africa, especially for women and youth.

AfCFTA was ratified to dismantle barriers to trade and stimulate employment-promoting economic growth at continental level. It additionally aims to strengthen Africa’s economic integration by creating a continental market with the free movement of persons, capital, goods, and services, which are crucial for deepening economic integration, and promoting agricultural development, food security, industrialization, and structural economic transformation.

Despite the significant political momentum and strong economic arguments, the realization of the AfCFTA will require institutional capacity building to complete negotiations and to implement and honour agreements, with the active participation of the private sector and effective cooperation between stakeholders at continental, regional and national levels.

The Team Europe Technical Assistance Facility to support the AfCFTA and Continental Economic Integration (TE TAF or the Facility) seeks to contribute to the African Economic Integration agenda through mainly the realisation of the AfCFTA. The TE TAF is meant to be an efficient, reactive and flexible mechanism to answer to the needs of the African Union (AfCFTA Secretariat, AUC and some AU Specialized agencies), RECs, AU Member States and other potential continental partners and regional private sector organisations, working on fostering the AfCFTA and economic continental integration.

Funded by the EU, Agence Française de Development, the German Ministry of Development Cooperation (BMZ) and Sweden, the Team Europe Technical Assistance Facility will be implemented by GIZ, Expertise France (EF), and FIAPP under the guidance of the AfCFTA Secretariat.

As one implementing partner of the TAF project , EF will be implementing several activities at national, regional, and continental levels including engagements with key private sector players. As such, the newly formed EF project Team based in Accra is looking at organizing a Team Workshop to amongst other things discuss a Work-plan for the year ahead and also identify key ways the Team can function at a highly effective level.
